About Gubiya

The Gubiya and Yananga ranges explore our relationship with country through water and how access shapes the way we move and live on the land.

Gubiya means "to swim" in Gamilaraay language, a privilege we experience as regional people when the seasons bring rain and the rivers flow. Each design begins as hand-drawn artwork by Tania Hartigan, then it is digitally translated onto fabric.

Three original symbols inspired by traditional imagery tell the story:

Spiralling Water represents the endless cycle we witness, the pattern of drought and rainfall that defines our seasons.

Fingerprints reminds us that every action we take on country ripples through the environment and shapes the flow of water around us.

Barbed Wire speaks to colonisation and its impact on our waterways, while also pointing toward repair and how we can protect our creeks and rivers by keeping farmland separate from the water that sustains us.
